Five Minutes Beyond Death

Luke 16:19-31

Everyone is traveling toward a final destiny. Job points us to this fact when he says, "Man dieth and wasteth away, yea, man giveth up the ghost and where is he?" Only Jesus is able to pull back the veil and show us our destiny. In Luke 16, He revealed the eternal destiny of "a certain rich man" and of "a certain beggar". The beggar died, "and was carried into Abraham's bosom" (heaven), v. 22, not because he was poor, but because he was saved. The rich man died "and in hell he lifted up his eyes." v. 23, not because he was rich, but because he was lost in sin. Jesus also revealed what the rich man learned after death, that every unsaved person needs to learn before death.

1. He learned the destiny of an unsaved soul, "in hell he lifted up his eyes."

2. He learned the difference death makes. In this life, he was comforted. In hell, he was in "torments".

3. He learned that his desires were unfulfilled. In hell, he begged for a drop of water to cool his tongue, but could not receive it.

4. He learned the duty to love other people. The rich man's flagrant sin was failure to love others. In hell, he begged someone to warn his brothers.

5. He learned the decision he should have made in this life. He learned that the most important decision was to receive Christ. He begged for God to send Lazarus to his brothers that they might make that decision, but it was too late for him.

Oh that we may learn that it is urgent that we repent of our sins, and trust in Christ while there is yet time.
